A HAMPSHIRE teenager has been chosen to star in a new Cancer Research UK Race for Life radio and YouTube advert.

In a 30 second voiceover, Chaia Rubenstein, 13, shared why she’ll be supporting her mum, Crystal Manuel, at this year’s Race for Life in Southampton after the 40-year-old beat cervical cancer.

The message will be heard on radio stations across the UK this spring and will also accompany a 15-second clip including photos and video on YouTube.

In Winchester, there will be 3k and 5k events on May 19.

Chaia, from Chandler’s Ford, said: “Why do I Race for Life? For my biggest cheerleader and best strawberry pancake maker, my personal hair stylist, who does my favourite braids. The most forgetful person I know but the one who makes me feel so happy, calm and relaxed.

“She’s my matching pyjama buddy and animal lover. The one who ran with me in her tummy, with me in the pushchair and now with me by her side. My mum’s name is Crystal and I’m racing for her.”

Crystal, who also lost her mum to womb cancer at 49, was diagnosed with cervical cancer during lockdown after experiencing abnormal bleeding and lower back pain. Despite a smear test result coming back clear, further investigations revealed the mum-of-two had a tumour near the top of her cervix.

Speaking during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, Crystal said: “My first thought was for my children and how I’d lost my own mum at just 49. But after surgery, chemotherapy, brachytherapy and radiotherapy, I am clear of cancer and will be taking part again in Race for Life with Chaia.

“I can’t remember ever not doing Race for Life and always have a fun day out. I’m really glad we’ve taken part for so long because the money raised has helped my mum overcome her cancer and will help many more people in the future too.”

Elisa Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson in Hampshire, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Chaia and Crystal for their support and know their story will make an impact on everyone who hears it.

“No matter how cancer affects us, life is worth racing for. Sadly nearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime. Race for Life has the power not only to transform lives, but to save them. We’re proud that Race for Life has already helped double survival rates in the UK.

“We’d love for as many people as possible across Southampton and beyond to join us at Race for Life. There is a race for everyone and we mean everyone. Walk, jog, run or take on the course however it suits best. It’s a chance to feel the power of moving together with fellow Race for Lifers and have fun with it.

“Whether people are living with cancer, taking part in honour of or in memory of a loved one with cancer, in it for the medals or just for the fun of fundraising, there is a place for everyone.”
