A WINCHESTER care home is taking part in the Memory Box Project to support residents with dementia.

Flowerdown Care Home, on Harestock Road, is using the boxes to help spark memories of its residents with dementia, helping them recall their working lives, home life and the town where they grew up.

The home recently had a memory box which was tailored to Winchester as a historic city. It featured pictures of the city, as well as the old buses which used to run and memories of when members of the royal family came to visit the city.

Kate Harfield, activities coordinator at Flowerdown Care Home, said: “We’re so pleased with how well the memory box has been received, our residents love engaging with all the components that were included.  What surprised us most was that, all the memories that were shared about being around the city when they were children and where they used to socialise in their younger days!

“Our varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active, and provides a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities.”

Flowerdown Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering high-quality care across its care homes and hospitals. Flowerdown provides nursing care, residential care and respite care.
