AN ARCHAEOLOGY group will once again be playing a big part in this year’s Winchester Heritage Open Days.

In keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Creativity Unwrapped’, Hyde900 is hosting medieval tile-making and calligraphy workshops.

From Friday, September 8 to Sunday, September 10 the community project will be based in the Inner Close of Winchester Cathedral, next to the cathedral offices.

Two calligraphers from the cathedral will be giving demonstrations followed by a chance for participants to have a go themselves.

Visitors will also be able to look through the Liber Vitae (‘Book of Life’), which was used to record the names of members and friends of monasteries and convents.

As well as the above bookable events, the group will be showcasing some of its recent archaeologic finds from its community digs as well as information on Hyde Abbey which once stood to the north of the city centre until its dissolution in 1538.

Experts from the archaeology, heritage and conservation sectors will be on hand throughout the weekend to chat with visitors about the 12th century abbey and other topics.
