Hyde900 has lined up three gardens for this year’s community dig which is taking place in the northern outskirts of Winchester.

As in past years, all over the age of five are welcome to take part in the search for more information about the church and cloisters of Hyde Abbey, the final resting place of Alfred the Great.

All the gardens are expected to yield finds which will include masonry, floor tiles, pottery and other artefacts from the medieval abbey, as well as the foundations of the abbey buildings.

The finds will help piece together the story of the important site.

Hyde900 dig coordinator David Spurling said: “This year we are looking in particular for the continuation of the intact 12th century culvert, the highlight of the 2022 dig, which formed part of the drainage system of the abbey.

“In addition, we are focussing on the garden which may contain the foundations of one of the towers of the church which Professor Martin Biddle expects to have formed a feature of the west end of the abbey’s huge church, with a nave almost as long as that of Winchester Cathedral.”

The dig runs from Saturday August 26 to Tuesday August 29.
