Two couples from the same Hampshire village recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversaries on the same day.

Swanmore residents Anne and Frank Pearson and Jill and David Newberry, all good friends, celebrated 60 years of marriage on Thursday August 17.

Mr Pearson, who represents the Central Meon Valley ward on Winchester City Council and has been major on two occasions, explained how he first met his wife.

The Mayhill Lane resident said: “Across a crowded student common room, I spied this slim girl chatting animatedly to a group of newbies like us.

“I knew I had to get to know her quickly. I did but it still took nearly three years to convince her that we should be married.

“But we were, and from then on have had a charmed life. As with all families some sadness, but a very happy and contented existence with laughter, love and mutual respect all the way.

“We are each other’s best friends and 60 years have flown by with a wonderful family supporting us.

“I learned early on that the two magic words to be uttered regularly were 'yes, dear'! Not complicated really!”

Mrs Newberry, of Chapel Road, said: “Like every couple, we've had our ups and downs. The most important thing is to try and work through things and try and sort things out.”

The 79-year-old explained how it felt to share the occasion with the Pearsons. She said: “It's very nice as we've known Anne and Frank for a long time. We have had quite a lot to do with them in the village, so it's lovely to share it with them.”

Mr Newberry, 81, served in the Royal Navy and was an East Hampshire district councillor.
