“Hampshire Highways is working round the clock to treat main routes across Hampshire but incidents like this demonstrate how everyone travelling on the network must take extra care when we have adverse weather such as the freezing temperatures we’re experiencing currently.

“We can assure residents and road users that we have sufficient salt stocks, vehicles and staff to continue treating the main routes as often as needed throughout the winter.”

The gritter has not been the only vehicle which has flipped over in the area due to the icy conditions.

The A32 near Wickham remains closed in both directions between B2177 Southwick Road/Bridge Street and Heath Road due to icy conditions, with a car overturning on black ice on the road late on January 17.

Gritting teams have been dispatched around the county in response to the cold snap which has left the UK facing below zero temperatures, with more freezing conditions predicted to be on the way.

“As the freezing weather continues our gritters will be out again at 12noon today on our priority 1 routes.

“RSTs (Road Surface Temperatures) are predicted to be below zero from 4pm and over night there will be a significant fall in temps and prolonged hoar frost.”
