Roly's Run returns to the Meon Valley in memory of Rich Walklate

Roly’s Run is a friendly, off-road event, held in memory of local ultra-runner and triathlete, Rich Walklate. 

It attempts to bring together the main elements of life that Rich valued. 

The course is a circular route in and around the Meon Valley that takes in some of the local hills, including Beacon Hill and Old Winchester Hill.

The course, which ends in Swanmore, is 80 per cent trail and involves some amount of climbing. Participants can choose three distances: 15, 20 and 40 miles.

The event welcomes walkers and runners, who are all entitled to a hot meal at the end, and as much cake as they can eat throughout the day. Roly's Run raises money for three charities - Sepsis Trust, Papworth Hospital Charity and Help for Heroes - in memory of Rich.

This year the event took place on Sunday, November 20 with more than 200 people taking part across all three race distances.

Anna Walklate, Rich’s sister, said: “The event surpassed all our expectations.

“We were absolutely overwhelmed by the positive comments that poured in from the participants. They had lovely things to say about the course itself, how well it was marked, the wonderful, friendly volunteers, and the food they got both during and after the race.”

After the event, Anna said she was delighted to receive lots of messages about how good the day was for all those who took part. 

The event raised more than £500 from the raffle and expects to surpass last year’s total of £5,000.

Roly’s Run is happening next year on Sunday, November 23.
