FOOTAGE shot at the scene of a fire in a communal bin store in Winchester last night (Saturday, May 14) shows firefighters tackling the flames.

As previously reported, Alresford and St Mary’s crews were called to a bin fire within a ground-floor bin store at a block of flats on Woolford Close last night at 10.32pm.

The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet before ventilation fans were used to clear smoke.

One resident who alerted the emergency services, but did not want to be named, said: "We could smell smoke coming up into our flat, we initially thought it was coming from the downstairs flat so went and knocked.

"We then called 999, two fire engines and a fast response car arrived within 10 minutes. They found the fire in the bin store and quickly extinguished it."

The resident said that firefighters on the scene were able to confirm that the blaze was started by a disposable BBQ, but Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is yet to release this information to this newspaper.

Expressing his concerns, the resident added: "It is very concerning to us as residents of the flats with a young child. If we had not have been awake and hadn't seen the smoke the fire could easily have spread.

"We are hoping that this will make people think twice in future!"
