WINCHESTER residents have spoken of their support for a discount supermarket as it was named as the UK’s lowest-priced supermarket by trade magazine The Grocer, in its independent price comparison survey.

Aldi retained its unbeaten record as it returns as the ‘guest retailer’ in this week’s Grocer 33, offering the lowest price for 26 products, meaning those in Hampshire can shop at any of the supermarket’s 16 stores in the region to guarantee the lowest prices.

The Grocer analysis shows the Big Four supermarkets are £9.88 (19 per cent) more expensive than Aldi on a basket of 33 everyday grocery items, while its most expensive rival Waitrose is £26.91 (52 per cent) pricier.

It also found that shoppers in Hampshire are £12.90 – or 25 per cent – worse off shopping at Tesco than at Aldi on the basket of items.

Winchester resident Tony Zorro, who regularly shops at Aldi in Burnett Close, Weeke, said: "It's good value, good quality and near my house. I know Aldi is much the same as Lidl."

Susan Derry, from Winchester, said: "I like shopping here because it is very reasonable and prices are always good and we live just round the corner.

"We also have the choice of this store and Waitrose across the road. Prices are significant. You can't always get what you want in Aldi, which is why I go elsewhere.

"I was looking for a vase for Mother's Day but they haven't got any but they do say they can't always guarantee because of delivery issues but they will have it in stock eventually. It'll just give me an excuse to come tomorrow."

Lawrence Daniel, also from Winchester, said: "I have shopped here for years because I used to live in Germany. It's cheaper than other stores and Lidl is too far away. I live In Badger Farm and Sainsburys is quite handy but it's more expensive. I have noticed a price difference between the two and it's worth a drive over to Aldi."

The news follows Aldi being confirmed as cheapest supermarket of the year in the UK by consumer champion Which?

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, said: “The cost of their weekly shop is more important than ever for many people right now, and it’s great that an independent price comparison has once again recognised that Aldi won’t be beaten on price.

“We are the lowest priced supermarket in Britain and our customers always pay less for their shop with Aldi, which is also why we were named Cheapest Supermarket of the Year by consumer champion Which?.”
