SIR: It’s high time for the decision to be made to keep Andover Road open. The rules for designating roads as ‘trunk roads’, as is Andover Road at present, or ‘district roads’, or ‘local access roads’ have been cardinal in town planning for almost 60 years, since the publication of Traffic in Towns, by Prof Buchanan in 1963.

I suggest that anyone in doubt should inspect the short length of Winchester Avenue so far completed. It’s a basic two-Lane road with numerous entrances from the residential access roads. It is totally lined with closely built houses, which will be intolerably noisy, containing and reflecting the noise of heavy vehicles. without frequent underpasses, it will be extremely hazardous for local pedestrians. The ‘Kings Barton town centre’ is yet to be built, but the road will cut straight through it, also making Winchester Avenue completely inappropriate as a trunk road.

Andover Road, as it is now, provides a wide reserve, with properties set well back, and is an excellent trunk route. It will continue to be the safest and most straightforward route to Winchester for long distance buses and commercial traffic. Local buses could well be routed through Kings Barton centre.
