The closure of Andover Road to divert traffic through the Kings Barton estate was recently discussed at a full meeting of the city council.

Cllr Stephen Godfrey raised a question about the number of residents who were opposed to the closure in a recent survey.

Of over 750 respondents to the survey, 91 per cent objected to the closure.

Cllr Godfrey said: “In the light of this overwhelming opposition to directing thousands of cars each day off the current main road and through the new housing estate, what action does the Cabinet Member intend to take to minimise the impact on so many residents?”

In response, Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith, cabinet member for built environment, said: “As Highways Authority, Hampshire County Council is the body responsible for highways design, including the detailed design of the Harestock Road junction which was approved by the Secretary of State on October 2, 2012 to realign Andover Road traffic through the Kings Barton estate.

“We have sought to ensure that the county council is aware of residents’ views on the issue of realigning Andover Road – and continue to encourage the county council, as highways authority, to agree a final design for the Harestock Road junction with Cala Homes which can be brought forward for planning approval.”
