THIS summer sees the return of Open Farm Sunday, and with it a chance to “discover the story behind your food”. On June 9, LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) have organised an event which will see farmers across the UK open their gates to visitors. Open Farm Sunday started in 2006 and last year over 150,000 people visited 335 farms. Mark and Joanna Cheyney are welcoming visitors to their mixed dairy and arable Middle Farm, Cheriton, from 11am to 5pm. Joanna Cheyney said visitors can expect tractor and trailer tours, and displays of machinery, both modern and vintage. In addition to a sheep-shearing demonstration, there will be a chance to have a go at virtual cow milking. The day also promises a straw bale maze organised by Perins School in Alresford. Abbotts Dairy at the Leckford Estate will also open, from 2pm to 5pm, where visitors can expected hosted farm tours and a chance to “meet the animals.”
