FAWLEY AFC’s 2-0 home victory over Fareham Town on Saturday was a significant one for Waterside football.

All 16 players involved in the Oilers’ squad were local lads living within an eight-mile radius of the club’s Long Lane home.

“We do have other players signed on from elsewhere, although not many, but it just so happened that they were injured or unavailable,” said chairman Kevin Mitchell.

“Having 16 players involved from the Waterside area was one of many positives from the game.

“Despite the bad weather, the pitch was in excellent condition – and I can’t remember the last time we kept back-to-back clean sheets.”

Fawley, who beat Alresford 1-0 last time out, left it late to secure victory over Matt Parr’s Fareham.

Ian Moore netted the 74th-minute opener, seizing on a loose ball in the box and firing in off the post. Dylan Knight got the second three minutes into stoppage time, slamming a direct free-kick into the top corner.

The Oilers fielded their sixth goalkeeper of the season, welcoming back Dan Parker who was part of their promotion-winning Division One squad of 2009/10.

Fawley, 15th in the Sydenhams Premier, face a tricky assignment at second-placed Moneyfields on Saturday, while Fareham host Horndean tonight.
