SOUTHAMPTON Airport has been put up for sale.

Owner Heathrow Airport Holdings (HAH) has put Southampton, Aberdeen and Glasgow airports on the market and is looking to conduct the sale by the end of the year.

A spokeswoman from HAH said: ''Over recent months Heathrow Airport Holdings group shareholders and management have been considering their strategic position in relation to our three airports, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton.

''As a result the group is now formally entering a sale process.

''Whilst there is currently no certainty that a sale will be concluded, the group intends to work towards completing a transaction by the end of the year.''

Spanish firm Ferrovial, which already part-owns Heathrow, was reported to have made an £800m bid for the airports in February.

Successful sales would leave HAH, which once ran seven airports, with only Heathrow in its portfolio.

Part of an airport's strength is the airlines that use it. Unfortunately the majority of flights are with FlyBE who are in the process of reducing the number of departures from Southampton, the "sunshine" routes to Spain and Portugal are stopping in November and they are trying to sell their Jets, if they can find a Buyer. The new policy for the airline now appears to concentrate of the last minute bookings of their business passengers.

I understand that in order to operate flights to Eastern Europe Southampton Airport needs another 150 or so metres of runway to allow for heavier fuelled aircraft. They already have this land available within their existing boundary and were previously looking to make the necessary runway extensions in the not too distant future.

I don't think they are interested in expanding their Airport portfolio, although they several.

As I have said before, that the Ford Factory isn't a factor, check a Google map satellite view of the area. How about a cross runway across the water meadows? Never will happen due to environmental objections. Or a "ski-jump" across the Motorway? No, we are stuck with it, needs someone to develop better aircraft with shorter runway performance. The Embraer 195 was basically aimed at Southampton, but is probably a wee bit too expensive to run.

Osprey before he died my brother lived in Darwin rd. he suggested putting the runway over Southampton rd.(runs alongside the airport?) & over the fields at the bottom of his road. then we could have International flights(long haul) & would need a new terminal(Ford).
Personally I don't live near it but would love to see this as hopefully it would create jobs.
