When the final whistle blew at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium on Monday afternoon, it confirmed that, with their 2-1 victory over Salisbury, Winchester City were safe from relegation and would be staying at "step 3" (Southern Premier League, one level below the National League South).

This is a momentous achievement for a team who were tipped for relegation at the start of the season but have defied the odds throughout the year, from winning away at playoff contenders Swindon Supermarine, a last-minute winner at Hanwell, rescuing a point from 2-0 down at home to Merthyr, a backs-to-the-wall win at Hendon to the three wins against Beaconsfield, Hayes and Salisbury which put them out of the bottom four's reach.

Ten years ago, as Winchester City emerged from uncertainty with their future secured, Steve Brine said that a successful football club was very much in Winchester's interests - a statement I'm sure everyone can agree with regardless of political affiliation.

City's last home game of the season is on Saturday against Hanwell Town. There is no pressure on either side, so get yourself down there and enjoy what should be an enjoyable game of football.
