I was very sad to hear of the death of veteran Winchester Campaigner Alan Weeks a couple of weeks ago. Although, unfortunately I never had the chance to meet the man, I heard a lot about him and his commitment to Winchester from people I have interviewed and met during my time in the city.
But what I find disgraceful is the news of three separate burglaries at Mr Weeks home during his time in hospital, and in addition that of forced entry to his property as reported by the Hampshire Chronicle since his passing.
These mindless, shocking and shameful acts of criminal activity once again, illustrate that crime is still very much happening in Winchester.
Mr Weeks was devoted, valiant and dedicated to many fiercely contested local issues, but these burglaries have completely disrespected a popular Wintonian figure.
What’s for sure though is Mr Weeks will always be remembered as a committed and valued person; and let’s hope he can be a symbol of inspiration for local and young people to follow in his proud footsteps in the future.
