Three Hampshire players have won The Berkshire Trophy, but Stoneham’s Joe Buenfeld came up a shot shy of making it four in the build-up to Hampshire’s opening league match.
Buenfeld trailed the overnight leader Jake Sowden by two shots at The Berkshire, but could only shoot a two-over par 74 in the final round.
Sowden, from Yorkshire, carded a 75 on the Red Course, to add one of the most famous amateur strokeplay titles to the English U25 crown he claimed at Woburn last summer, an event Buenfeld has played well in, in the past.

Joe, who lost in the final of the 2022 Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands Amateur Championship, at Stoneham, to close friend James Freeman, shot a five-under 66 on the Blue at The Berkshire after opening with a 70 on the Red on the first day.
That left him two shots behind Sowden, who was nine-under going into Sunday, but Joe could only match the eventual winner’s third round 71.
Buenfeld made 18 birdies and an eagle over the 72 holes suggesting his game is trending nicely for the big events coming up over the next two months.
Buenfeld spent four years at Texas’ University of the Incarnate Word – playing in the same Southland Conference as Forster during his two years at Southeastern Louisiana, before his big move to Long Beach, where he was won twice this year to push himself into contention for a Walker Cup place at California’s iconic Cypress Point, in September.
