ROMSEY Town Girls' title challenge went down with all guns blazing as Mudeford came from behind to win 3-1 and retain their New Forest Girls League title.

Town started excellently - after five minutes Naomi France-Sargeant's perfectly flighted corner was volleyed in sweetly by the reliable left foot of Sophie Solloway at the far post.

Mudeford were very competitive through the centre of the field and, after good passing, Sophie Harrison equalised with a shot from ten yards.

Town had the better of the first half with Megan Brown consistently stretching Mudeford's defenders with her running - and they might have been ahead after Stacia Baigent's volley was saved well, and France-Sargeant's free kick bent agonisingly across the goal mouth.

Baigent was even more prominent after the break and had three good efforts saved, the best a volley after Bryony Barnes and Chloe House had broken from the back.

Mudeford went ahead against the run of play, as Town's defenders missed a low cross and Emily Digweed was unable to stop the shot.

Town lost France-Sargeant to a back injury, but upped the pace to fight back. Georgia Smith and Holly Hudson combined well up the right and Abbie Delaney carved out a chance for Smith which the keeper saved bravely.

The luck was not with Town in the dying minutes as the champions broke and, although Digweed saved well, the rebound fell kindly for Mudeford to score the decider.

Town's season, which has held so much promise, is not over yet, as they have the New Forest Cup final to look forward to, at the end of April.
