Veteran Hampshire all-rounder Gareth Berg has joined Northamptonshire.

The 38 year-old has signed on loan for the rest of the season, at the end of which the move will be made permanent.

Arguably Hampshire's best signing of the Giles White era, Berg has enjoyed five memorable seasons since arriving from Middlesex in 2015, excelling with bat and ball in red and white-ball formats.

An important part of the side that won the Royal London One-Day Cup last season, when he contributed a crucial run-out and took the final Kent wicket at Lord’s, he also helped Hampshire reach the final of this season's competition.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White said: "Gareth has been an outstanding player and excellent club man. He arrived in 2015, got a wicket with his first ball and went on to become player of the year.

"Since then he has played a huge part in Hampshire teams across all formats. This year, first-team appearances have been limited and this move to Northamptonshire represents a great opportunity at this point in his career.

"On behalf of everyone at Hampshire, I’d like to thank Gareth for his great contribution to the Club and wish him and his family well for the future."

Berg said: "I’d like to thank Hampshire for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love so much (after being told by medical professionals I probably wouldn’t take to the field again).

"The past five years have been some of my most enjoyable in professional cricket, winning a trophy & playing in two Lord’s finals and a few personal bests being notable highlights.

"As much as I would have liked to have seen out my final years with Hampshire, I now have the great opportunity to play for Northants who gave me my first taste of County Cricket.

"I can’t wait to bring my experience and passion for the game with me in this new chapter. I want to wish the club all the best for the future going forward and to thank every fan who has supported me during my career here."

Berg last featured for Hampshire in July’s Specsavers County Championship fixture against Kent at the Ageas Bowl.
