FRASER Forster has completed a season-long loan move to Celtic.

Forster, who is believed to be one of Saints’ highest earners, travelled to Scotland today to undergo his medical before his return was formally announced.

He initially left Celtic to join Saints in 2014 for £10m after winning three SPL titles and playing regularly in the Champions League.

The Scottish giants were unable to stump up the cash to take Forster on a permanent basis, which is why he returned on loan.

There isn’t an option for Celtic to sign him next summer, but Saints are hoping he will get plenty of playing time under his belt which will place him in the shop window.

Forster’s best performances in a Saints shirt came when Ronald Koeman was in the dugout.

He played a crucial part in helping the south coast side qualify for the Europa League which prompted the former Saints boss to label him as “one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and maybe in Europe”.

But with four goalkeepers now on the books and Forster nowhere near claiming the number one spot, there was an expectation that either he or Alex McCarthy was going to have to move on this summer.

The 31-year-old’s temporary departure also confirms Angus Gunn’s status as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s first choice, with McCarthy becoming his understudy.

Forster has made just one appearance for the St Mary’s side since Boxing Day 2017, which came in the 3-0 defeat to West Ham at the end of last season.

It was a remarkable fall from grace for the Northumberland-born shot-stopper, as he had become a regular fixture in the England squad for their international games.

But when ex-boss Mauricio Pellegrino dropped him nearly two years ago, he wasn’t able to regain a spot in the matchday squad, let alone the starting XI.

Despite this, the Daily Echo has previously reported that he often looked better than his teammates in between the sticks during training.

Celtic were keen to boost their goalkeeping department after Scott Bain dislocated his thumb last week.

During his five years at Saints, Forster made over 100 appearances.
