1-0 v Middlesbrough (home)

Three days after losing to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League, Saints bounced back with this win at St Mary’s.

Sofiane Boufal’s first Premier League goal, a stunning 25-yard drive into the top corner, proved the difference.

Steven Davis headed over on the stretch from a Cuca Martina cross and Jay Rodriguez’s excellent downward header from a James Ward-Prowse corner was cleared off the line before he put the ball over the bar from two yards following a Nathan Redmond cross.

Saints: Forster, McQueen Fonte, Martina, Van Dijk, Romeu, Clasie (Long 85), Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez, Tadic, (Redmond 45), Boufal (Davis 73).

1-0 v Luton (home)

The lowest-ever league crowd at St Mary’s at the time -19,086 - witnessed a Theo Walcott wonder goal for a Saints side under the caretaker-management of Dave Bassett and Dennis Wise, following Harry Redknapp’s return to Pompey.

Walcott, who was still only 16 at the time, showed the class that would earn him his move to Arsenal a month later.

On 23 minutes he sprinted after a long punt.

His pace allowed him to catch defender Chris Coyne but it was hard to see what he would do next from the left touchline.

Totally out of the blue, he tried an outrageous left-footed lob shot on the half-volley.

Luton goalkeeper Dean Brill was left stranded as the ball sailed over his head and into the far corner.

It was the last of Walcott’s four league goals for Saints

Saints: Niemi, Higginbotham, Lundekvam, Svensson, Belmadi, Oakley, Quashie, McCann (Pahars 72), Delap, Fuller (Kosowski 89), Walcott.

Martin Chivers bookended this match with goals for Ted Bates’ side in the old division two

The former England striker gave Saints a fifth-minute lead by heading in a Terry Paine cross.

Paine restored Saints’ lead at the start of the second half, netting the rebound after his fellow winger John Sydenham struck a post.

Sydenham rounded the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 and Chivers tucked away Stuart Williams’ pass to complete the scoring in the 89th minute.

Saints: Forsyth, Hare, Williams, Wimshurst, Knapp, Walker Paine, Chivers, Kemp, Melia Sydenham.

2-1 v Lincoln (away)

Two Charlie Wayman goals gave Saints this victory at Sincil Bank in the old division two.

Saints were missing Bill Ellerington, who was mourning the passing of his father, an ex-Saint.

Wayman gave Bill Dodgin’s side a 25th -minute lead, but the home side equalised on the hour after a weak back pass from Alf Ramsay.

No matter, Wayman capitalised on a mix-up at the other end to score the 75th-minute winner.

Saints: Black, Ramsey, Rochford, Wilkins, Webber, Mallett, Day, Curtis, Wayman, Bates, Grant.
