IT’S not quite The Ashes but these Hampshire cricketers could probably run the Australians close.
Easton and Martyr Worthy Cricket Club held a community fundraiser last Friday (July 26) including a tournament for locals.
The club, based near Winchester, was raising funds for its new academy which trains 13 to 21-year-olds.
Club chairman Adam Murch said: “It’s been a brilliant day. It’s the first one of these we have done after it was suggested last year when one of our games was rained off. Looking forward there’s nothing to stop us doing more of these and getting bigger and better.”
Eight teams competed in the ‘sixes’ tournament including sides from both Easton pubs, The Cricketers Inn and The Chestnut Horse, who contested the final, with the ‘Chestnut Cavaliers’ coming out on top.
The player of the tournament was Sam Dickety of the Chestnut Cavaliers who was rewarded with a new bat from Redwood Cricket Company.
Around 250 turned out on the day and the event raised around £4,000 for the academy.
The event also included a barbecue provided by The Chestnut Horse and children’s activities including a bouncy castle.
