WINCHESTER adventurer John Pilkington will be giving a series of talks starting this month about his latest expedition to the Horn of Africa.

John spent five months travelling in Eritrea and Ethiopia, partly on foot with a donkey, retracing the route of a Victorian rescue mission of the 1860s.

He said: “Of course much has changed in 150 years, but off the beaten track I found ox-ploughs and mud-and-thatch houses which those Victorian rescuers would have instantly recognised. It was history and adventure combined!”

The talks will be on Friday September 21, Thursday October 4 and Friday October 12 at the Discovery Centre on Jewry Street, starting at 7.30pm.

His talks are always extremely popular and quickly sell out.

Tickets are available at £12 from the 182-seat venue on Jewry Street or online, and also from Oxfam Books & Music on Parchment Street.

Proceeds will go to Oxfam and WaterAid.
