CIVIC chiefs are encouraging people to take part in the most important consultation on transport in Winchester in years.

Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council want people to help shape a new Winchester Movement Strategy.

They are looking for people's views on what is important to residents, commuters and visitors, when it comes to travel.

County council executive member for environment and transport, Cllr Rob Humby, said: “As the city grows and evolves, we want to make sure we have an agreed strategy which is aimed at delivering the right travel and transport arrangements, so Winchester continues to be a great place to live, work and visit.”

The consultation starts on Monday October 30, and runs until Friday December 8.

The councils say they wish to hear views on:

• how to achieve the right balance between different types of traffic;

• how best to support growth and economic vibrancy;

• improving air quality;

• and any other issues which are important to residents .

Cllr Jan Warwick, city council’s portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “We are really pleased to be working in partnership with the County Council to provide this opportunity for residents, businesses, visitors and transport providers to share their views about what restricts movement around our Historic City, and how we can identify priorities to help improve the way Winchester works from a transport point of view.”

Cllr Humby added: “The results will form part of the new Winchester Movement Strategy for the next 20 to 30 years, and help the County Council to bid for national funding and prioritise where money is spent.”
