MORE applications have been made by mobile phone company Vodafone to build masts in Winchester.

It includes one site where the firm has twice withdrawn its plans, faced with vocal opposition from residents.

The site is at Stoke Road in Abbotts Barton and locals blocked the road to protest about the scheme last time around.

Now Vodafone is trying again as it aims to boost its 3G coverage with a fresh network of masts across the city.

It withdrew plans for six of them in March 2011 while a seventh was blocked by planners.

This time around, four sites have been identified, including Stoke Road. Residents there have already pledged to fight the plans again.

Two of the others would be built at Chilbolton Avenue in Winchester and Andover Road North in Harestock.

The first scheme to be submitted, as reported last week, is for the corner of Stockbridge Road and Stoney Lane in Weeke. Protesters there have also pledged to fight.

Winchester City Council is expected to make a decision on the schemes within the next few weeks.
