THERE was standing room only as parents gathered to hear how their Winchester school could be affected by a leap in admissions.
More than 100 parents with children at Western Primary School in Fulflood heard about Hampshire County Council’s plans to admit up to 90 reception year pupils.
If Western expands from a two-form to a three-form entry school, it could have more than 600 pupils on the roll within seven years, a rise of almost a third from the current 420.
Headteacher Lorraine Smith said: “It’s a worry what they’re suggesting.”
Other Winchester schools earmarked for expansion are Winnall, All Saints, Harestock, St Peter’s Catholic and in Alresford, Sun Hill Infant.
Discussions are ongoing with Winchester city schools regarding the provision of up to 80 extra places for children starting school in 2012.
