RESIDENTS of a Winchester suburb have united to produce a book showcasing local literary talent.

The writers of Inspired by Hyde are aged from nine to 90 and have contributed stories, articles, poems and prose.

The book was launched at Hyde Parish Hall last Saturday.

The mayor, Richard Izard said: “I and many other people have been inspired by Hyde900 – and all the activities that this community has put on during 2010, to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the founding of Hyde Abbey.

“The thing that is most inspiring is the way that it has brought the community together – from St Bede Primary School to St Bartholomew’s Church – and not forgetting the Hyde Tavern, in where I understand many of the wilder ideas have been brewed – and where the writers of Hyde have been meeting and reading together for almost two years.”

Cllr Izard pointed out: “It was even printed in Hyde by Sarsen Press. You can’t get more local and community-focussed than that!”

He praised Nicky Morris, who organised the competition that produced the contents of the book – and Madelaine and Andy Key who designed and typeset the book.

Copies are available priced £8.
