TWO bishops, the Dean of Winchester Cathedral and the city’s mayor will be joining forces tomorrow (Friday, May 25).

They will be officially opening the new £1.4m pastoral centre at St Peter’s RC Church in Jewry Street, Winchester.

Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth will preside, bless the building and unveil the dedication plaque.

He will be joined by around 300 parishioners and Bishop Peter Doyle of Northampton, who used to be a Winchester parish priest.

Representing the cathedral will be the Dean, The Very Rev James Atwell.

A rosebush is also due to be planted by the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Frank Pearson.

The pastoral centre, which has replaced a 1960s building, was designed by Sue Masser and built by Feltham Construction in Newbury. It will be available for community groups to hire.

Priest at St Peter’s, Canon Paul Townsend, said: “The building has exceeded our dreams of being a welcoming place, with an instant impression on visitors of light, space, and warmth.

“It will make a massive contribution to the spiritual and pastoral life of our parish and my hope is that it will strengthen the work we do together as Christians in Winchester.”
