THE Festival of Volunteers is returning to Winchester, and will be held in the grounds of the city’s cathedral.

It is the second time that it has been held, and aims to give residents a chance to find out more about charities in the area.

Winchester MP Steve Brine is backing the event. He said: “The festival, which includes organisations such as Cancer Research, Samaritans, Winchester Churches Nightshelter, and Winnall Rock School to name but a few, brings into focus a number of things about the voluntary sector.

“Firstly, it’s not always what you think; volunteering is incredibly diverse. Volunteers can be hugely dedicated but there are plenty of people who just help out occasionally.”

He added: “This is important work and hugely admirable, but speaking to volunteers reveals that it is also a source of pleasure too.

“Volunteering can be about enjoyment, socialising, gaining experience and sharing skills.”

The festival is being backed by Winchester Area Community Action, Winchester Volunteer Centre and the city’s university and cathedral.

It is also being supported by the Hampshire Chronicle and Winchester Business Improvement District.

Taking place on Sunday, June 3, it is being held in the cathedral grounds alongside Culturenet’s One Big Table.

That event will aim to showcase Winchester’s ethnic communities through music, dance and food.
