RESIDENTS will be able to comment next week on a radical shake-up of Romsey's on-street parking.

Borough transport chiefs are behind big changes due to come into force next year.

Shoppers and visitors to the town who park in Princes Road, Duttons Road, Malmesbury Road, Portersbridge Street and Jubilee Road will be hit by the proposals. Currently, non-residents can park free in these streets for up to two hours at a time, but under the plans, the maximum stay will be just one hour.

The aim behind the proposed measures is to free up more parking for residents with permits.

Anyone who moves into new developments within restricted parking zones will not be able to buy on-street parking permits in future.

A further 20 streets in the town are subjected to proposed new traffic regulations.

An exhibition of the proposals will be on view at the borough's Duttons Road offices from Monday to Friday next week. And officers will be on hand to answer residents' questions about the proposals between 11am and 8pm on Monday and Wednesday and 11am until 6pm on Friday.

Residents will have four weeks to make their comments after the exhibition has finished. All the information will then be examined by officers and used to compile the final draft for the new traffic regulation orders. A public consultation exercise will follow before the proposed changes become law.
