SCORES were left disappointed this afternoon when a flypast near Winchester was called off at the last minute.
Crowds had gathered at Worthy Down army base to see two of the most iconic RAF planes of World War II - the Lancaster and the Spitfire.
Enthusiasts were dotted across the Winchester district looking out for the flypast, which was arranged to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Group Captain Clive Montellier, commandant of the Defence School of Personnel Administration at Worthy Down, said wind and low cloud had caused the cancellation.
“I'm disappointed,” he added. “These are unique aircraft and you have to fly them with a great deal of care to preserve them.”
