A nine-hour seven-a-side rugby festival was played out before a 1,000-strong crowd on Easter Sunday as 32 teams competed for four trophies at Winchester RFC.

Koruk Kamikaze beat Pink Indians 26-10 in the final to win the Winchester Sevens Cup.

Koruk’s captain Jeremy Walmsley received the trophy from Winchester RFC president Dominic Hiscock, who thanked the six referees who presided over 76 matches.

The participating teams played out 48 matches within eight pool groups during the morning session, pool winners going on to compete quarter-finals, semis and the final of the cup .

The eight were were D7W, Phantoms, Buccaneers, Koruk’s Kamikaze, Dad’s Army, MTC, T Screwed and Pink Ladies.

Second place teams in each pool then repeated the process in the Bowl competition, third place teams contested the Winchester Plate while the remaining teams battled for the Sevens Tankard.

The Bunnies, all players from Peter Symonds College, won the Tankard after a 26-7 victory over NFDS.

The Dorset & Wiltshire under-19 side, called Druids, claimed the Winchester Plate after beating the Elves, a team of doctors, 22-21.

The 2008 cup winners, The Otters, beat The Farmers from Salisbury Rugby Club 19-12 to claim the Sevens Bowl before Koruk Kamikaze provided a thrilling climax.

Tournament organiser Jes Broadway said: “This is the second year that we have attracted 32 sides from across the south of England. They have all produced high quality rugby and everyone has enjoyed the day.

“Winchester’s tournament is seen as the start of the Sevens season which runs through to May. A number of the teams will now go from here to contest the Rome Sevens and the Heineken Sevens.”
