THE public will get a greater chance to raise concerns about policing following changes to the way Hampshire Police Authority runs its meetings.

Until now people attending the meetings have been unable to address the members unless specifically invited.

However, residents are now able to make presentations to the main meeting.

The deputation process is commonplace at local council meetings, but following a discussion in September, members agreed to allow the public to address the main authority meeting from January 1 about matters on that day’s agenda.

The 17 members of the authority meet seven times a year at its offices in Winchester. The chief constable and his team of senior officers are also present at the meetings. Councillor Jacqui Rayment, authority chairman, said: “Many people do not realise they can already come to meetings and hear how the authority makes sure we have an efficient and effective police force for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

“People now have the chance to come and speak to the Authority to help inform our decision-making process, and I would encourage anyone who wants to come along and share their views to do so.

“This is a great opportunity to raise your policing concerns at the highest level in Hampshire. I can assure people that we will listen carefully to the views expressed, and let them know how we will take their matters forward.”
