A historic pub just steps from Winchester Cathedral has shut for a major refurbishment.

Fuller’s William Walker pub in The Square is being revamped and should reopen at the end of October.

Named after the deep-sea diver who famously helped save Winchester Cathedral in the early 1900s, the pub draws residents and visitors.

Paul Stephens, Operations Manager for The William Walker, said: “I’m really excited about the changes coming to The William Walker with a full refurbishment of the downstairs bar and the upstairs dining room, as well as the customer toilets and the exterior of the building too.

"Fuller’s continuously invests in its pubs to make sure we can always deliver a first-class customer experience, and when we reopen, in October, we know our customers will love what we’ve done.

"Having the best environment is great for our guests and helps us deliver what we do best – wonderful cask ales, great cocktails and delicious fresh food brought to you by an outstanding team of people.

"We will be open in good time for the graduation season and Winchester’s famous Christmas market, and the team and I look forward to seeing old and new customers when we reopen."

The total cost of the refurbishment has not been disclosed.

In 2022, the pub reopened following an £80,000 upgrade that added new artwork, flooring, furniture and décor, as well as menu changes.

The project was designed to keep the pub “looking fresh” while showcasing its brass-topped bar and historical memorabilia.

In 2016, a £500,000 transformation added an upstairs dining area, redesigned interiors, nautical-themed décor and a wider food and drink selection. The redesign drew on William Walker’s life and legacy.

Customers can follow the pub’s updates as it prepares to reopen on Facebook.

The William Walker remains one of Winchester’s best-known pubs, prized for its spot opposite the cathedral and its year-round appeal to locals and tourists.

It stands on the site of the former Old Market Inn and is run by Fuller’s.
