A Paralympic gold medallist has become the new patron of a Hampshire dementia charity.

Monica Vaughan, a retired British athlete and multiple gold medal-winning Paralympic swimmer, has been named patron of Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW.

Monica is widely recognised for her exceptional achievements in international sport, representing Great Britain at the highest level, but also brings personal experience to the role as a carer for her partner, Lynn, who lives with dementia.

She has an insight into both the emotional and practical challenges faced by individuals and families affected by the condition.

Monica said: "I am honoured to become a patron of Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW.

"Caring for my partner Lynn has given me a deep understanding of what living with dementia really means, not just for the individual but for those who care for them.

"I am passionate about helping ensure that no one faces this journey alone, and I look forward to supporting the charity’s vital work."

As patron, she will support the charity’s work across the region by raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging action.

The charity, which serves the Hampshire and Isle of Wight areas, offers practical support, advice and community programmes to help people with dementia and their carers live with dignity and connection.

Monica was awarded an OBE in recognition of her outstanding contribution to sport.

Helen Hamblen, chief executive of Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW, welcomed the appointment.

She said: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Monica as our patron.

"Her remarkable achievements in sport, recognised through her OBE, and her lived experience as a carer bring an incredibly powerful and authentic voice to our work.

"Monica’s support will help us reach more people, reduce stigma, and ensure families affected by dementia feel seen, supported, and understood."

The charity aims to create dementia-friendly communities across the region.

Monica will work with Dementia Support Hampshire & IOW to highlight the challenges faced by those affected by dementia and encourage community engagement.

Her appointment marks an exciting step forward as the charity continues to grow its impact across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
