When a flight is cancelled, most travellers worry about rebooking tickets or finding a hotel for the night.

But another unexpected cost can quickly add hundreds of pounds to the bill: airport parking.

With millions of Brits preparing for Easter and summer holidays, experts warn that travellers who drive to the airport could face surprise charges if their return journey changes.

New research from Confused.com suggests British travellers could be paying up to £189 for just four days of airport parking – and if a flight is delayed or cancelled, that cost can climb even higher.

Airport parking can already cost more than you think

Airport parking prices across the UK vary widely depending on the type of service and location.

According to the data, the average price for a four-day stay is:

  • £93.90 for short-stay parking
  • £59 for long-stay parking
  • £101 for meet-and-greet services

But some short-stay car parks can charge as much as £189 for four days, particularly at larger airports.

Short-stay and meet-and-greet options are usually closer to terminals, making them more convenient for travellers – but that convenience comes with a higher price.

And if travel plans suddenly change, the final bill can grow quickly.

Airport prices vary widely across the UK

Where you fly from can also have a major impact on parking costs.

The research found significant regional differences across the UK.

Average airport parking prices for four days include:

  • England: £110 short stay, £64 long stay
  • Scotland: £58 short stay, £42 long stay
  • Wales: £88 short stay, £81 long stay
  • Northern Ireland: £62.99 short stay, £45 long stay

Short-stay parking in England is typically around 90% more expensive than in Scotland, while Wales has the highest average long-stay rates.

Some smaller Scottish airports even offer free parking, helping keep prices lower overall.

What to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled

Parking charges do not automatically pause when a flight is disrupted.

Travellers may need to pay extra for each additional hour or day their car remains in the car park.

Experts recommend taking several steps immediately if your plans change.

1. Check your booking terms
Some airport parking providers allow travellers to amend bookings online.

2. Contact the car park provider
If delays are caused by airline disruption, parking companies may sometimes offer flexibility.

3. Keep evidence of the delay
Proof from the airline may help if you later dispute additional parking charges.

4. Check your travel insurance
Some policies may offer limited cover for travel disruption costs.

Why cancelled flights can double your parking costs

If your outbound flight is cancelled after you have already parked your car, travellers could face several extra costs.

These may include:

  • Paying for the full original booking even if you do not fly
  • Higher “on-the-day” rates when extending parking
  • Paying again if you rebook a new departure date

During peak travel periods, limited parking availability could also push last-minute prices higher.

The cheaper way to get to the airport

Parking may not always be the cheapest option for getting to the airport.

The research found that cost is the biggest concern for 42% of travellers, followed by convenience (40%) and journey time (37%).

Experts suggest travellers should compare several options before deciding how to travel.

These include:

  • Taking a taxi
  • Getting a lift from friends or family
  • Using public transport
  • Comparing parking options in advance

More than half of travellers (55%) say they would consider getting a lift from family or friends, which could help avoid parking charges altogether.

Why planning ahead could save hundreds

Experts say travellers should factor potential disruption into their airport travel plans, particularly during busy summer months when delays are more common.

Comparing transport options and checking parking terms carefully could make a major difference.

In some cases, the gap between the cheapest and most expensive parking options is more than £100 for a four-day trip.

For families already budgeting carefully for holidays, avoiding unexpected parking costs could mean more money to spend once they finally reach their destination.
