If you consider yourself a Friends fanatic, then Mayflower Theatre is calling your name this week.
With West End stages packed with musical adaptations rooted in film and TV - from Mrs Doubtfire to Matilda, and even Back to the Future - it was only a matter of time before the iconic 1990s sitcom had its moment in the spotlight with FRIENDS! The Musical Parody.
Friends, of course, remains a cultural phenomenon. I wasn’t even born when it first hit our screens, but through the magic of DVD boxsets and Netflix, I’ve watched every single episode more than once and I know I’m not alone in that. The series’ devoted fanbase has endured through the decades, and this stage show is clearly crafted for the true enthusiasts.

Expect all the much-loved references, from the infamous “Pivot!” to Monica’s unforgettable “I know!” and, naturally, “We were on a break!”. Despite having to cover more than ten years and 200 episodes, it fits in iconic moments from Rachel bursting into Cafe Perk in her wedding dress, to the Thanksgiving trifle. It never felt rushed or frantic.
Each member of the cast perfectly channels the quirks and traits of our favourite New Yorkers, from Ross’s exasperated sighs to Chandler’s razor-sharp wit and self-deprecating humour. Daniel Parkinson, taking on Chandler, keeps the laughs coming with his spot-on delivery, while Edward Leigh delights as he bounces between characters such as Gunther and Marcel, never missing a comedic beat.
There’s even a treat in store for musical theatre lovers, with nods to classics like “Cell Block Tango” and “Seasons of Love” woven into the production.

As someone who enjoys Friends but doesn’t consider themselves a superfan, I can't say I enjoyed every minute of the show. It balances between faithful recreation of the tv series and full-on parody. The mix didn’t entirely feel natural at times and it felt like a few jokes were missed by the audience. I would’ve loved to see it lean more towards the parody genre.
Still, there’s no denying the nostalgia factor. FRIENDS! The Musical Parody is drenched in affection for its source material, and I walked out with an urge to dive straight back into a rewatch.
FRIENDS! The Musical Parody runs until Saturday at Mayflower Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at mayflower.org.uk.
