A gentle, admirable, and fitting tribute, By Royal Appointment honours Queen Elizabeth II with warmth at Mayflower Theatre.
The play, penned by Daisy Goodwin, known for ITV’s Victoria, celebrates the late monarch’s sense of duty and her iconic sense of style, which often spoke louder than words, especially during the more testing times of her reign.
It takes the audience from 1969 until the monarch's death, a quick jaunt through history highlighting Queen Elizabeth II's most iconic outfits and the reasons behind them.
At the heart of the production is Anne Reid, acting royalty, whose career includes memorable roles in Last Tango in Halifax, Coronation Street, and Dinner Ladies.

Anne Reid and Caroline Quentin as The Queen and The Dresser (Image: Nobby Clark Photographer) Reid effortlessly steps into the shoes of Queen Elizabeth II, delivering a performance filled with elegance, poise, and subtle emotional depth.
Every gesture, every moment of silence, speaks volumes about the Queen’s character and thoughts, even when nothing is actually said.
Despite having recently celebrated her 90th birthday, Reid shines in this demanding role, taking audiences on an intimate journey that feels both authentic and respectful.
Joining Reid is Caroline Quentin, another television favourite, known for classic series such as Jonathan Creek and Men Behaving Badly.
As GiGi, the Queen’s loyal dresser, a character reminiscent of the real-life Angela Kelly, Quentin brings warmth and devotion, offering a glimpse of the camaraderie and trust within the royal household.
Of course, despite not sharing the same name, the fictional character and the real-life person share similar qualities. Like Kelly, GiGi is from the north; they both had unwavering loyalty, and they were removed from the Royal household following the Queen's death.

Dreyfus shines as the Australian hat maker, merging over-the-top theatrics with genuine emotion effortlessly.
Adding a unique touch is Gráinne Dromgoole as The Curator, who guides the audience through historical moments, from the AIDS crisis to Brexit, contextualising the Queen’s fashion choices within history.
While some may find her interruptions that break the fourth wall bizarre, her narration keeps the pace brisk and the narrative fresh, ensuring the play never loses momentum or charm.
By Royal Appointment is ultimately a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign. With moving performances, comedic moments and touching scenes, the play stands as a worthy homage to a monarch who served for 70 years.
