A CHINESE takeaway in a Hampshire town has shut just a few months after it received a poor food hygiene rating.

Jumbo R2, on Houchin Street in Bishop's Waltham, has closed its doors

It received a two-out-of-five rating from the Food Standards Agency after an inspection by Winchester City Council in August.

A member of staff told the Chronicle that the restaurant's last day of business was January 5, but did not want to comment on the reasons for the closure.

She also said that the restaurant was renting the space from a landlord.

Jumbo R2 has drawn criticism from some internet users

In 2022, Pip Weller posted a review of the takeaway on Tripadvisor.com. She wrote: "This restaurant seem[s] to think food safety is some sort of joke. [...] The kitchen should be condemned until they can safely run a kitchen. Do yourself a favour and go to a different takeaway.

"I don’t think they’ll take this seriously until someone gets seriously ill (or worse!)

"You can request to see the report by emailing the local council. Boycott this restaurant, we deserve better."

The closure prompted discussion and confusion on local Facebook groups such as the Bishop's Waltham chat room with residents saying they saw the premises being emptied despite the business website saying they were closed for a refurbishment.
