AMBITIOUS plans to demolish a former care home and construct a country house in its place have been approved.
The application, submitted to the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) by Alex Jaggs of Finch Hatton on behalf of an unnamed applicant, involves the demolition of Westbury House in West Meon.
Designed by Francis Terry Associates, the plans will see a new house erected on the land, designed in an 18th-century style. Landscaping work including tree planting will also be undertaken, based on designs from 18th century designer Charles Bridgeman.
The application was approved by the SDNPA Planning Committee.

READ MORE:Addressing the committee, Jonathan Moritz, a neighbour of Westbury House, voiced his support for the application.
He said: “It seems to me that these plans are in keeping with the planning considerations of the national park. I would also highlight that the new owners have demonstrated a passion for the environment in the park and care for the heritage of the estate, that is what I have found while speaking with them and looking at the plans.”
Mr Moritz went on to say that the house as it currently stands is “a wreck”, continuing: “I urge you on behalf of the neighbours; we do not believe there would be a better plan for this”.
David Butcher, of East End, also voiced his support on behalf of the West Meon Flood Group.
He said that the proposed master plan would tackle flooding along Coombe Lane.
Mr Butcher continued: “I truly believe that the scheme will enhance the whole site, the environment, biodiversity and the historic landscape. So, I commend it to all, and I hope you will support it on behalf of the West Meon Community.”
No objectors spoke at the meeting.
Cllr Alun Alesbury said: “I strongly support this. I think it is an excellent piece of new, traditional architecture.
“This is an 18th-century designed landscape. It needs something appropriate, in my view, to that, and appropriate to Hampshire and my understanding is that the architects and designers followed precedent appropriate to Hampshire.

“It is an extremely grand proposal, but, on the other hand, it is a house that is in a semi-ruined state at present”.
Cllr Robert Mocatta said: “I live very close to (Westbury House), I have suffered along with the residents who have spoken today. The site is fantastic, it is a really interesting, historic site. I really like the conditions about heritage – I think that is really worthwhile. I think the plans to restore the gardens and grounds are admirable, and I think what they are doing on the Meon is to be commended. I think the house looks fantastic compared to what is there – I have no problem with demolishing the existing Westbury House”.
The committee on November 14 voted to approve the plans.
