AN INDIAN restaurant in Hampshire has been awarded an improved food hygiene rating after a calamitous inspection this summer.

The Waltham Tandoori on Bank Street, Bishop's Waltham, was hit with a one-out-of-five rating in June after an inspection by the Winchester City Council for the Food Standards Agency.

Now, however, it has been handed a new rating of four after the restaurant requested another inspection.

In a message posted on Facebook, The Waltham Tandoori said: "Exciting news!!! Our food rating has been reinstated to 4! Thank you for your support - come taste what everyone's raving about..."

The Waltham Tandoori (Image: Google Streetview) In August, the restaurant owners defended the low rating in an anonymous letter posted to The Chronicle's offices in August.

The letter read: "At the time of the inspection, which was outside normal operating hours, there was no management staff present, only leaving the kitchen staff, who, because of the language barrier, could not answer or understand the many questions they were being asked, [which] led to a void in the report and a misrepresentation."

This time, the restaurant's hygienic food handling was rated as good, its cleanliness and condition of facilities and building was rated as good and its management of food safety was rated as generally satisfactory.
