It’s good to hear that Winchester High Street is the fourth most appealing in the UK (Chronicle online).
However, away from the High Street, Winchester pavements are in a parlous state.
Broken paving slabs, slabs that tip when you stand on them, raised edges are creating a dangerous and unsightly environment .
I myself have gone sprawling with bags of shopping outside Iceland tripping on a protruding stone.
Cracked paving stones are everywhere presumably from vehicles parking on the pavements but revealing poor construction methods.
Maintenance seems non existent except for replacing the odd slab when someone complains. It is surely only a matter of time before the council faces a huge compensation bill for someone seriously injured by tripping on these dangerous pavements.
