AN all female running group has been sponsored by a Winchester housebuilder.

Millgate Winchester is backing the Winchester Gazelles which was established by students at the Winchester University to encourage students to enjoy running in a supportive environment.

Robert Carter, of Millgate, praised the students for their initiative.

“I have been immensely impressed with the girl’s determination to encourage young adults to try running. There is plenty of opportunity for competitive running in our area but that environment is not for everyone. The Gazelles have created a pathway for students to exercise and enjoy running in a supportive group and we are delighted to support them,” he said.

The group was established by Erin MacGowan. She said: “When I began running I could not find a university group suitable for beginner female runners so I decided to begin the Gazelles. I pitched the idea to one of my housemates in late September and we were up and running by November. Since then, we’ve grown to lead multiple run groups at our Wednesday meeting and we aim to accommodate students with every pace and experience level.”

On April 16 the Gazelles took part in the Basingstoke Festival 5k. This was their first race as a club and for some of the girls their ever first race.

Erin was delighted with their achievements. “This moment of pride is one I will never forget. We crossed the finish line with multiple personal bests despite the wet weather. I look forward to taking part in future events with these incredible girls and developing lifetime friendships through running. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Gazelles.”
