My wife and I were blown away by the performance of Yorke Dance Project at the Theatre Royal on April 23.

It was not ballet as a pretty spectacle, but an inspiring demonstration, by a small touring company of excellent dancers, of the use of dance to explore complex human experiences and emotions. We felt very lucky to have this a few minutes’ walk from our house.

Thank you, Theatre Royal. The very enthusiastic audience, however, comprised only about a quarter of the theatre’s capacity, and very few appeared to be below the age of 30.

Winchester has its own university, plus a sizeable segment of Southampton’s and a large sixth form college. Surely many of their students are interested in theatre, music, dance and drama, and many of them must be considering careers in these areas. They could have learned a great deal about artistic commitment and integrity from this show.

The Theatre Royal tries hard with its publicity but perhaps a line of communication with the local colleges could achieve more, so that more teachers would say to their interested students “This is something you should really try to see.”
