THE death of a much-loved Romsey man has been ruled a misadventure.

Alistair Humphery, 54, of Doris Bunting Road, was found deceased in his bedroom by his mother, Annette Humphery on December 7, 2022, an inquest heard.

A post-mortem revealed that he had died from a combination of prescribed drug and alcohol toxicity, with his blood-alcohol level more than five times over the drink-drive limit. A secondary cause of death was listed as coronary artery atheroma.

Speaking at the inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, April 17, Ms Humphery said that her son was popular, had many friends and “loved the people that he loved”.

The inquest heard that he lived with chronic pain in his lower limbs following an accident when he was 18, which also led to issues with his mental health. He would later develop a life-long problem with drinking – while he did seek help, he would never fully stop drinking.

The inquest also heard that Mr Humphery would self-medicate with alcohol and prescription painkillers, with his family saying they believed it was a cry for help.

Assistant coroner Sally Olsen ruled the death as a misadventure, saying: “I have not heard any evidence that this was an attempt to take his own life.”

She offered her condolences to Mr Humphery’s family.
