Winchester MP Steve Brine joined the Winchester Litter Pickers in one of their regular city centre ‘sorties’, concluding with a drink in local Winchester pub The Willow Tree.

He Brine said: “The Winchester Litter Pickers go out in all weather week in week out to keep our city clean. It’s a huge service they do for Winchester and we should all thank them for it.”

Meeting every week for the past 30 years, the Winchester Litter Pickers are a dedicated team made up of volunteers and aided by council grants to assist in the task of keeping the streets tidy.

Picking up an estimated 1,000 bags of litter per year, the Local group not only aims to encourage others in the city to recycle but in turn support services such as the ‘Air Ambulance Service’ through their efforts.

The group, easily visible in their glowing hi-vis, are committed to positive action to tackle the problem of littering. Often meeting up after their work to enjoy a coffee and a chat, the Winchester Litter Pickers not only provide a service but in addition a place for people to come together.

The Winchester Litter Pickers always welcome new members, if interested find out more by contacting Tidywinchester@gmail.com or make your way over to the Cleanup UK site.
