ROADS in Barton Stacey are the latest targets for Hampshire metal thieves who have stolen seven iron drain covers from the village in the last three months.

This follows a spate of thefts in this part of the county, with 15 covers being stolen from the Test Valley area since June.

Hampshire County Council is concerned about injuries to pedestrians and cyclists and damage to cars from the uncovered drain holes. The cost to replace the covers is estimated to be around £200 each.

Councillor Mel Kendal, executive member of Hampshire County Council for environment, said: "It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured as a result of gully thieves' selfishness.

"Stealing gully gratings is mindless, highly dangerous and places greater financial burden on the council tax payer.

"This isn't the first time this has happened and I urge anyone who either notices that a gully grating is missing or sees someone acting suspiciously near a highways drain to contact us or the police immediately."

According to the council, thefts in the Test Valley include two in Lockerley, two in North Baddesley and four in Thruxton.

In the Rushmoor and Hart areas of North Hampshire, 44 covers have been stolen.
