A Romsey charity offering free debt advice has said the cost of living crisis is far from over for those on low incomes.

Christians Against Poverty's (CAP) Romsey team, based at The Freedom Centre, says many people on low incomes do not have enough money to stay out of debt and afford the essentials needed to live.

CAP's latest YouGov polling shows that in the South East, a quarter of people are struggling with debt repayments. One in ten adults in the South East says it's the main reason they've used a credit card in the last six months, with 13 per cent of adults saying they had skipped a meal at least once a month to cut costs.

Freedom Church in Romsey, alongside Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is sounding the alarm about the growing number of households across the UK sinking into debt.

The Freedom Church in Romsey is home to the regional CAP debt centre, which offers those in need free debt advice and money coaching courses. A report published by the CAP this month reflects how the cost of living crisis facing low-income households in Romsey is far from over.

Romsey’s CAP debt centre manager Debs Niblett said: “It could be that they have been made redundant, are going through a relationship breakdown, suffered an injury or long-term illness or a loved one has passed away, resulting in less household income. These types of often unexpected or unplanned situations can cause both emotional and financial pain.”

“The report also found those in low-income jobs were often most affected and that employment doesn’t necessarily protect against the impact of low incomes and debt.

"The partnership between the Freedom Church in Romsey and Christians Against Poverty allows us as a society to tackle the stigma around poverty and debt through a free advice service determined to improve the finances of those living in the local area.

“We do this because as Christians we believe in taking practical action to show love, care and compassion to everyone in our community, especially those in need.

“By encouraging local people in our community to get support you could be the reason they seek free help. You can help us change lives and bring freedom from debt and poverty to more local people.

“Together, we can fight against poverty in Romsey.”
