This week's front page story makes for interesting reading.

Some may think the judge was harsh to impose an immediate prison sentence on a man with 40 years behind him in the building trade.

A man who had never been in trouble or before the courts in his life now faces eight months behind bars for risking the life of two builders, just to cut costs.

The new Cavendish Centre is now finished, with modern student flats. But the start of the project, as the courts heard, was a very different story.

Stephen Davies, along with his fellow company director Neil Bolton, chose the cheap option of getting two builders to strip the building, in Winnall, instead of getting licensed asbestos removers do to it in a safe manner.

The cost may have been cheaper in the short term, but very costly in the long term. The punishment for Davies is severe, but think about the two builders who had no idea about the toxic material they were dealing with.

Asbestos exposure can often be lethal, with conditions arising such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. We can only hope the exposure was not significant and that the two builders can steer clear of medical complications.
