WINCHESTER Cathedral is marking Easter with a range of different services and events.

To celebrate the beginning of Holy Week, the annual Palm Sunday Procession will make its way through the city centre on March 24.

The procession will depart from Winchester Castle, outside the Guildhall, at 10.10am and make its way to the cathedral. It will be accompanied by palms and hymns, as well as the ever-popular Dermot the Donkey.

This will be followed by a service of The Palm Sunday Liturgy at 10.30am in the Cathedral itself, followed by a very Palm Sunday sacred concert Buxtehude Membra Jesu Nostri. Tickets must be booked in advance and cost £15.

The Very Revd Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, said: “You are warmly invited to travel through Holy Week and to Easter with Winchester Cathedral following in the steps of Christ. We will be reflecting together on healing, humanity and holiness. Please join us!”

On Maundy Thursday, March 28, at 11am there will be the Diocesan Chrism Eucharist, where clergy and ministers from across the Diocese gather with the bishops to renew their vows and receive Holy Oils for ministry in the year to come.

At 7pm, Winchester Cathedral will celebrate the Institution of Holy Communion with the Eucharist of The Last Supper. This will be followed by the watch at 8.30pm, where the altars are stripped, and members gather in the dark cathedral around the Garden of Repose.

At 11am on Good Friday, March 29, there will be storytelling around the cross in the Cathedral Outer Close led by Churches Together in Winchester. At 7.30pm Pergolesi Stabat Mater will be sung by the Winchester Cathedral choristers.
